Once there was a gentleman who married again. This second wife, was the proud and haughty woman. She had two ugly daughters of her own by her first husband who were like her in all things. He had a daughter from his first wife. She was full of goodness and sweetness which she took from her mother, who was the best creature in the world. No sooner was the wedding over, the stepmother began to show herself in her true colours. She made her work in the meanest jobs of the house scouring dishes, tables, etc., cleaning madam's chamber, and those of her daughters. She slept in a wretched straw bed, while her sisters slept in fine rooms, with floors all inlaid, on beds of the very newest fashion, and where they had looking glasses so large that they could see themselves at their full length from head to foot.16The ugly sisters.Cinderella
