The Listeners are the people in a small, hand-picked team, tucked way is a research institute, within a tiny rural village in Oxfordshire near the ancient artifact known as The White Horse. They are predominately young and all beautiful. Led by Carol, a person suffering from a secret addiction, they have a mission, an important one for all mankind: to interpret a signal from an intelligent alien life from 4 light years away; man's first contact with an alien life.
They discover it's a code to generate a clone of their species, and the team embark on doing exactly that. Against this backdrop, the individuals become embroiled in intimate relationships with one-another, are spied upon, are subject to threat, and one among them with a dark, hidden purpose.
